My only experience with this species was in September, 2007 near the town of Aldama, Tamaulipas. William Farr and I were driving the highway to Barra del Tordo and stopped along a roadside ditch next to an abandoned building. We located a calling male from shallow water amidst dense grass. No other anurans were calling from this site on that evening.
The only experience I have with this species in Mexico has been in the state of Coahuila. Along the highway south of Cd. Acuna I flipped an adult G. olivacea beneath a flat rock. On a rainless evening I found several calling males in a flooded roadside ditch about 20 miles south of Cuatrocienegas. The only other calling anuran at this site was Anaxyrus debilis insidior.
PERSONAL NOTES:
I have had many experiences with this frog in Mexico. In 2002 I found them calling from roadside ditches just to the west of Alamos, Sonora as well as from our hotel grounds in that city. In the roadside ditch site we also found the first Hypopachus variolosus found in Sonora since the 1960′s. In August, 2003 I found Gastrophryne tadpoles in a small pool east of Yecora, Sonora at 5,700′ El. In April, 2004 Jesse Delia, Aaron Chambers and I flipped an adult beneath a small roadside rock at 4,500′ just east of Yecora. In August, 2008 during a hurricane’s landfall I found this species calling in large numbers along the state highway to Puerto Libertad, west of Hermosillo, Sonora. Smilisca fodiens, A. punctatus, A. retiformis and I. alvarius were also found in these same roadside ditches.

NATURAL HISTORY:
PERSONAL NOTES:
I have encountered this species several times around Mexico. In 2003, Chris Gruenwald and I found G. usta calling from roadside ditches in the Chamela region of Jalisco, along highway 200. D. sartorii was also calling in these pools, and Triprion spatulatus reticulatus was present but did not vocalize. In 2005 I found G. usta calling from the margin of a flooded field in Cuautlapan, Veracruz at 4,200′ El. and again from a rainforest pond in the Sierra de los Tuxtlas, Veracruz. The latter locality was the site of an immense chorus of anurans, which including this species totalled 11 species. Lastly on that same trip we found G. usta calling from a flooded road-rut west of Salina Cruz, Oaxaca. Also vocalizing in this pool Triprion spatulatus reticulatus, Scinax staufferi, Incilius valliceps and Physalaemus pustulosus. Additional encounters with this species were logged during the course of the night as we drove Hwy 200 west from Salina Cruz to Puerto Escondido.
