In June, 2005 while looking for the likely-extinct Plectrohyla siopela on Cerro Cofre de Perote, I happened upon this interesting salamander. It was found beneath damp pine needles on the face of what used to be a waterfall in a small ravine. This was at one point a wet oasis on the dry northern face of the mountain, but at some point in the last 20 years the spring source was capped and flow diverted to an army outpost down the mountain. The Plectrohyla appear to be extirpated but Chiropterotriton still occur due to the fact that they can utilize the subterranean moisture still available at the site.
