SIERRA ATRAVESADA ARBOREAL ALLIGATOR LIZARD

IDENTIFICATION:
DISTRIBUTION:
Abronia bogerti is known only from a single specimen, found in the Sierra Atravesada of extreme southeastern Oaxaca. It could potentially range in to western Chiapas as well. Elevational range unknown.

HABITAT:
As the precise locality of the only known specimen of A. bogerti is not known, it is hard to define what the species’ habitat preference is. Campbell (1993) theorized that this species probably inhabits “rainforest” at low-moderate elevations.

NATURAL HISTORY:
The natural history of this species is unknown. Like other low-elevation species of Abronia it most likely lives an almost entirely arboreal life, feeds on insects and arthropods and gives birth to live young.
TAXONOMY:
Campbell (1993) theorized that Abronia chiszari, endemic to the Sierra de los Tuxtlas of Veracruz, is the sister species of A. bogerti.
TYPE:
Described as Abronia bogerti by Tihen (1954). Holotype: AMNH 68887. Type locality: “North of Niltepec, between Cerro Atravesado and Sierra Madre, Oaxaca, Mexico, probably between 2500 and 4500 feet.” Obtained by Thomas C. MacDougall in 1948.
PERSONAL NOTES:
I have no experience with this species despite having sought Abronia in the Sierra Atravesada.
CONSERVATION STATUS:
This species is listed as “Data Deficient” by the IUCN. It’s extent of distribution is unknown, but almost certainly occurs over a much broader area than is currently recognized. It may be threatened by deforestation in some localized areas.

DISTRIBUTION:
Currently, Abronia chiszari is known from elevations of 360-800 meters on the slopes of Volcan Santa Martha in the isolated Sierra de los Tuxtlas, Veracruz. It almost surely occurs on adjacent Volcan San Martin.
